Gloucester field hockey stays perfect as Hornets and Vikings set up a week of rematches

The Fishermen are 7 and 0 after three straight shutouts. Football opens league play Friday against Winthrop.

Gloucester's field hockey team is still unbeaten, and Manchester Essex and Rockport are about to see a lot of each other.

Gloucester

Field hockey improved to 7 and 0, and 4 and 0 in the league, with three shutouts in five days. The Fishermen beat Peabody 10 to 0 on Sept. 24, blanked Manchester Essex 2 to 0 at home the next day and won 5 to 0 at Peabody on Sept. 28. Gloucester has outscored its opponents 33 to 3.

Football, 2 and 1, rolled past Revere 42 to 7 on the road Sept. 25. The Fishermen, ranked third in the first Division 5 power rankings, now open league play at home. Read more on the rankings.

Boys soccer won 1 to 0 at Saugus on Sept. 28 after a 2 to 1 loss at Beverly. The team is 3 and 6 overall but 3 and 1 in the league.

Girls soccer played to two ties last week, 1 to 1 with Winthrop and 2 to 2 with Saugus, and is 1 and 3 with two ties.

Volleyball won twice, sweeping Minuteman on Sept. 24 and beating Triton in five sets on the road Sept. 28, to reach 3 and 5.

Manchester Essex

Field hockey is 5 and 2 with one tie, and unbeaten in the Cape Ann League with five wins and a tie, good for second place. The Hornets lost 2 to 1 to Masconomet on Sept. 21, won 4 to 0 at North Reading on Sept. 23, fell at Gloucester and then beat Hamilton-Wenham 2 to 0 on Sept. 28.

Boys soccer, 5 and 1 with three ties, beat Georgetown 4 to 0, tied Masconomet 1 to 1 and won 4 to 0 at Hamilton-Wenham on Sept. 29.

Girls soccer lost 6 to 0 at Georgetown and 1 to 0 to Hamilton-Wenham and is 2 and 4 with a tie.

Football is 0 and 3 after a 21 to 0 loss to Lynnfield on Sept. 25.

Rockport

Boys soccer beat Georgetown 5 to 3 at home Sept. 29 after a 1 to 1 tie at Amesbury. The Vikings are 3 and 5 with one tie.

Girls soccer lost 2 to 1 at Amesbury and 1 to 0 to Georgetown and is 1 and 7.

Field hockey lost 2 to 0 at Pentucket and tied Amesbury 0 to 0. The Vikings are 2 and 5 with one tie.

  • Girls soccer: Gloucester at Marblehead, 4:30 p.m.
  • Volleyball: Gloucester at KIPP, 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 6

  • Soccer doubleheader, Rockport at Manchester Essex: girls 4 p.m., boys 6 p.m. Manchester Essex won both first meetings on Sept. 8, the girls 1 to 0 at Rockport and the boys 3 to 1.
  • Field hockey: Gloucester at Beverly, 4:30 p.m.
  • Volleyball: Minuteman at Gloucester, 5:45 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

  • Field hockey: Rockport at Ipswich, 4 p.m.; Manchester Essex at Amesbury, 4 p.m.
  • Boys soccer: Winthrop at Gloucester, 4:30 p.m.
  • Girls soccer: Gloucester at Winthrop, 4:30 p.m.

Looking further ahead, Gloucester's football team hosts Salem on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., and Gloucester hosts Rockport in a soccer doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 10: girls at 4 p.m. and boys at 6 p.m. (Read how the week went.)
