Gloucester's field hockey team is still perfect.
The Fishermen beat Beverly 1 to 0 at Newell Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to improve to 9 and 0. It was a Northeastern Conference game between the league's two unbeaten teams, and Gloucester is now 6 and 0 in the conference.
The game went back and forth at a fast pace. The only goal came on a breakaway. Junior Fiona Black carried the ball from midfield, and Samantha Tucker finished the play, the team said in a post on its GHS Field Hockey Facebook page.
Beverly pushed hard in the second half to tie the game. Gloucester's defense held, clearing the ball out of danger and stopping Beverly's penalty corners. Senior goalie Aleena Brown made several key saves for the shutout, Gloucester's sixth of the season.
Strong midfield play helped the Fishermen close out the win. They have outscored opponents 39 to 5 this season.
