Unbeaten Gloucester field hockey ranks ninth in Division 3 in the MIAA's latest power rankings

Manchester Essex field hockey is 10th in Division 4. Gloucester football sits fourth in Division 5, in rankings counted before Friday's win over Winthrop.

Gloucester's unbeaten field hockey team is ninth of 53 teams in Division 3 in the MIAA's latest state tournament power rankings, released Friday with scores entered through early Friday morning.

The Fishermen are 8 and 0 and have the third best average margin in the division. They sit behind eight teams because the formula also counts strength of schedule, and Gloucester's opponents rate below the division average so far. The MIAA adds a team's average margin, capped at 3 goals a game, to the average rating of its opponents.

That could change quickly. Gloucester hosts Beverly, the Northeastern Conference's other unbeaten team, on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. See the area's top scorers.

In field hockey, soccer and volleyball, the top 32 teams in each division make the state tournament, regardless of record.

Football

Gloucester is fourth of 36 teams in Division 5, down from third in the first rankings this week. Read about the first rankings. The new list counts the Fishermen at 2 and 1, so it does not include Friday night's 28 to 7 win over Winthrop. Read about that game. Swampscott, Shawsheen Valley Tech and Northeast Metro RVT rank ahead of Gloucester.

Manchester Essex is 24th of 31 in Division 7 at 0 and 3, a record that also predates Friday's loss to Amesbury.

In football, the top 16 teams in each division qualify, but only if they have at least 3 wins and have played 7 games.
