Cape Ann Current: Keeping Cape Ann current

Free daily news for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea

Police Log

Search calls logged by Cape Ann police departments. We publish each department's public daily log after our privacy edits, explained below. A call in this log is a request for police service. It is not proof that a crime happened, and it does not mean anyone did anything wrong.

More towns coming. We are waiting on daily logs from all four Cape Ann police departments and will add more information as it becomes available. Right now we have the Rockport Police daily log and the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police weekly log, which the department posts on its website (July 5 through Sept. 12 so far). Essex has agreed to send its log. State arrest records for the four towns are on the Arrests page.

About this log

Massachusetts requires every police department to keep a daily log of calls, open to the public (Mass. General Laws, chapter 41, section 98F). The departments send us their logs, and we publish them here as they were released, with the privacy edits below. We do not add to what the department wrote, and this page never names anyone.

The log is a record of what officers were called to and what they did. Many entries are routine patrol checks. An arrest or summons listed here is an accusation, not a finding of guilt. Everyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Charges are often reduced or dismissed later, and this log does not show what happens in court.

What we leave out

  • Names. We never publish the names, ages or home addresses of anyone in the log, including people who were arrested. Arrests are listed on our Arrests page by town, street and charges only.
  • House numbers. We show the street or intersection only, never a house or unit number. We also remove the department's internal property codes.
  • Sensitive calls. Calls involving domestic violence, sexual assault, children, a family or household member, a person who uses a wheelchair or is bedridden, mental health, suicide or a death are shown only as "Call withheld for privacy," with no details. State law keeps several of these out of the public log, and we go further to protect victims, children and people in crisis.
  • Anything unclear. If an entry has notes or details we can't confirm fit these rules, we hold it until an editor reviews it.

Departments also leave some calls out of the logs they release, so the call numbers here are not always in a row.

Ask us to review an entry

If something here is wrong, or you believe an entry identifies you or puts someone at risk, email [email protected] with the town, date and call number. We review every request and keep a record of each one, as described in our standards. If you are in danger, call 911.

This log is for public information. It is not a criminal record and may not be used for background checks, employment, housing, credit or insurance decisions. For official records, contact the police department.
