Cape Ann Current: Keeping Cape Ann current

Free daily news for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea

Arrests

The arrests and summonses below were reported by police departments in their public daily logs and to the state. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Massachusetts law keeps domestic violence and sexual assault arrests, and arrests of anyone under 18, out of the public log, so they do not appear here.

State arrest records

Adult arrests the Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea police departments reported to the state's crime reporting system. These records come from the Massachusetts State Police and do not include names or streets.

More towns coming. We are waiting on daily logs from all four Cape Ann police departments and will add more information as it becomes available. Right now we have the Rockport Police daily log and the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police weekly log, which the department posts on its website (July 5 through Sept. 12 so far). Essex has agreed to send its log.

About this list

We do not publish the names, ages or home addresses of people who are arrested. Each line from the police logs gives the town, the street where the call happened and the charges, as the department released them. A summons means the person was told to appear in court and was not taken into custody. Charges are often reduced or dismissed, and this list does not show what happens in court.

If something here is wrong, tell us at [email protected] and we will check it against the department's log and fix it. Read more in our standards.

The state arrest records are each department's own reports to the state's crime reporting system (NIBRS), so they arrive months after the arrest and only cover departments that sent data for the period. We leave out anyone under 18, sex offenses, and each person's race, ethnicity and ZIP code. In a small town those details with an age and a date can point to one person. "All other offenses" is the state's catch-all category; it often includes warrants and violations that don't fit another category.

This list is for public information. It is not a criminal record and may not be used for background checks, employment, housing, credit or insurance decisions.
