Free Access and Attribution Policy
Our work is free to use. Credit us and link back.
Cape Ann Current Free Access and Attribution Policy, version 1.0, effective 2026-10-05.
Who may use our designated resources
Websites, businesses, news organizations, federal, state and local government websites, schools, libraries and nonprofits may use the resources we designate for reuse (our datasets, widgets and Cape Ann Classroom lessons, as each page states) free of charge, if the website or publication using them does not operate a paywall for its news or informational content.
- A paywall includes subscription, metered-access or paid-membership restrictions on news or informational content.
- A single free page does not qualify a publication that is otherwise paywalled.
- Advertising, sponsorship, optional donations and sales of unrelated goods or services are allowed.
- School systems that require logins to protect student privacy are allowed.
What you may not do
- Sell our resources, bundle them into a paid data service, or put them behind payment, a compulsory donation or a mandatory marketing signup.
Credit every public use
Every public use must visibly credit Cape Ann Current and include a clickable hyperlink to the original resource (the specific page you used, not just our home page). Government websites must follow the same requirement. Place the credit near each reused widget, chart, table, map or other published output substantially based on our resources. A credit only in download metadata, application code, a tooltip or a general site footer does not satisfy this policy.
Standard credit: Source: Cape Ann Current.
Adaptation credit: Adapted from Cape Ann Current. Changes made by [organization name].
Example: <p>Source: <a href="https://capeanncurrent.com/data-tools/maritime-records/">Cape Ann Current</a>.</p>
Rights we cannot grant
This policy grants only rights Cape Ann Current owns or is authorized to grant. It is not a Creative Commons or open-source license. Facts are not owned by anyone, and nothing here claims ownership of underlying facts or public domain material.
Each resource page lists its sources, links to their terms and says what our policy does not cover. Material we have not cleared, such as collections that require permission, is left out of our downloads, widgets, lessons and embeds.
