Gloucester beats Winthrop 28 to 7 on homecoming night
Nico Alves ran for about 150 yards and freshman Fode Kaba scored twice as the Fishermen won their Northeastern Conference opener at Newell Stadium.

Gloucester's football team gave its homecoming crowd a win Friday night, beating Winthrop 28 to 7 at Newell Stadium behind a running game that piled up close to 300 yards.
Senior Nico Alves ran for about 150 yards and a touchdown, and freshman Fode Kaba passed 100 yards with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, by the count of the KPN Live broadcasters. Quarterback Cole Mosley-Wynn ran for another score.
The win opened Northeastern Conference play for the Fishermen and paid back the Vikings for last season's 7 to 6 loss in Winthrop. Gloucester is now 3 and 1 overall and 1 and 0 in the league. Winthrop fell to 2 and 2.
How it happened
The first quarter was scoreless. Gloucester went for it on fourth and 1 on its opening drive and was stopped. Winthrop drove inside the 15, helped by a roughing the passer penalty, but the Fishermen's defense pushed the Vikings back and a field goal try of about 30 yards fell short.
Gloucester answered with a 10 play, 80 yard drive that carried into the second quarter. Alves picked up about 50 of those yards, and Mosley-Wynn kept the ball on a fake handoff and ran in from the 6. The extra point was no good, leaving it 6 to 0.
Late in the half, Alves finished another long drive with a short touchdown run, and Kaba ran in the two-point conversion for a 14 to 0 lead with 2:50 left before halftime. Winthrop had 28 yards of offense in the first half, the broadcasters said.
Kaba scored from the 1 late in the third quarter, and the extra point made it 21 to 0. Senior Will Aaron then forced a fumble after a Winthrop catch, and Gloucester recovered.
Early in the fourth quarter, senior Tanner Smith ran a reverse for a first down on fourth and 3. On third and goal from about the 10, Mosley-Wynn pitched to Kaba, who ran it in, and the kick made it 28 to 0 with nearly 11 minutes to play.
Winthrop scored its only points with about 5:40 left, when the quarterback snuck in from the 1 and the Vikings added the extra point. Gloucester ran out the clock on the ground.
On defense
The Fishermen held Winthrop's running game in check all night. Junior Giuseppe Ferrara had a tackle for a loss on the first play of the second half, and Mosley-Wynn, who also plays linebacker, sniffed out a screen pass for a 5 yard loss in the fourth quarter.
Homecoming and the Hall of Fame
The homecoming king and queen were crowned at halftime, and the 2026 Gloucester High School Athletics Hall of Fame class was introduced on the field. The class of 10 individuals and one relay team will be inducted today, Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. at the Benjamin Smith Fieldhouse. The ceremony is open to the public, and KPN Live plans to stream it.
The Fishermen have won two straight since a 20 to 16 loss at St. Mary's of Lynn, following last week's 42 to 7 win at Revere. Read the game preview.
