City Council previews state grants and retiree health care bill

Good morning, Gloucester. It's Sunday, October 11. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Current, free public information for Gloucester. The City Council reviews state grants and retiree health care.

On Tuesday, the SFL Corporate Communications Committee meets at 9 a.m. The City Council and Licensing Board meet at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, October 14, the School Committee meets at 6 p.m. On Thursday, October 15, the Gloucester Lyceum Committee meets at 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, the City Council considers $256,300 in state grants for downtown signs and housing zoning. The council also receives the city's latest valuation of retiree health care benefits, estimating a $181.2 million liability. The agenda includes changing the funding source for a $1 million budget measure.

The deadline to register to vote is Saturday, October 24. Early voting runs from October 17 to 30. The state's voter booklet was mailed in September, and the city posted a link to online and audio versions.

Today, Magtoberfest runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Lexington Avenue in Magnolia. The North Shore Arts Association hosts an art sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Pirates Lane.

Gloucester field hockey reached 10 and 0 with a 5 to 0 win at Danvers on Friday. Also on Friday, football beat Salem 35 to 17. Yesterday, boys soccer shut out Rockport 1 to 0, and girls soccer lost to Rockport 3 to 1.

The Weather Service expects mostly cloudy skies today with a high near 60, and rain tonight. Columbus Day is forecast to be partly sunny near 63. High tide in Gloucester Harbor is at 12:20 p.m. today.
