Good evening. It's Monday, October 12. This is the Evening Current, free public information for Cape Ann from the Cape Ann Current. I'm Kerry Jane. Tonight, we preview Tuesday's candidate forum for the Fifth Essex state representative seat, look at the region's significant drought status, and run down Tuesday's public meetings.
Cape Ann is now in a significant drought. State data show the Northeast Region, which includes Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester by the Sea, moved to a Level 2 drought on Friday, October 9. The state asks people to use less water and follow their town's water rules.
In Gloucester, the 3 candidates for state representative in the Fifth Essex District meet in a public forum Tuesday night at Gloucester High School. According to the organizer's event page, Republican Christina Delisio, Transparency Inclusion Environment candidate Gil Frieden, and Democratic incumbent Andrew Tarr will present their platforms and answer questions. The Cape Ann Political Action Committee is hosting the free event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school lecture hall.
Also in Gloucester, the Licensing Board holds 2 public hearings on liquor licenses Tuesday night. The agenda lists a petition for a new annual restaurant license for Mehfil on Washington Street, and a petition for a change of class for an annual restaurant license for Rocky Neck Lobster Company II. The board also plans to take up a request for a special 1 day license for a Halloween fundraiser at Hammond Castle Museum. The hybrid meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at 19 Harbor Loop and on Zoom.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the Gloucester School Committee plans to vote on updated operating protocols and a new job description for an assistant director of special education. According to the agenda, the superintendent will also give an update on the entry plan. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Gloucester High School library. Residents can join on Zoom or by phone, and can speak for up to 3 minutes during oral communications.
In Rockport, the Zoning Board of Appeals met on Thursday, October 8, on a plan for an addition on Eden Road. The board did not vote. Members planned to visit the site today at 4:30 p.m., and the hearing continues on Wednesday, October 28, at 6 p.m.
