Good morning, Gloucester. It's Friday, October 16. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Current, free public information for Gloucester. Today, the school district's special education reserve hits a record low.
The Gloucester School Committee heard Wednesday night that the district's reserve fund for unexpected special education costs will fall to a record low. A subcommittee report says the district expects 4.1 million dollars from the state this year for outside tuition and transportation. After spending, only 348,382 dollars will carry over. The district used to keep about 1.1 million dollars as a buffer.
The Gloucester Licensing Board plans to award the city's last available year round full liquor license at a Zoom meeting on Monday, October 19, at 6:30 p.m. Two restaurants competed Tuesday, October 13. Board members signaled support for Rocky Neck Lobster Company II, noting a competing bid for a Washington Street restaurant was incomplete because required notices to neighbors were never mailed.
Today, the Cape Ann Museum offers a tour of the Captain Elias Davis House from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Tomorrow, the Sawyer Free Library hosts a Tech Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Thursday, Gloucester volleyball fell to Swampscott 3 sets to 2, and Beverly beat Gloucester golf 48 to 24. Today, boys soccer hosts Danvers at 4 p.m., and field hockey travels to Masconomet at 4:30 p.m. Tonight, football hosts Swampscott at Newell Stadium at 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects rain and patchy fog today, with a high near 68 and wind gusts up to 33 miles per hour. A small craft advisory runs until 6 p.m., followed by a gale watch through Saturday evening. Afternoon high tide in Gloucester Harbor is at 3:41 p.m.
