Good morning, Gloucester. It's Tuesday, October 20. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Current, free public information for Gloucester. Today we look at a drop in local arts funding.
At its meeting Wednesday, October 14, the Gloucester Cultural Council learned it has 10,175 dollars to give out this cycle. That is about half the usual amount. The city says 4,224 dollars and 40 cents of last year's grants will come out of this year's state money to cover unreturned paperwork. Chair John Hicks expects about 15 awards of around 700 dollars each.
The city will collect unneeded medications this Saturday, October 24. The Health and Police departments will take prescription and over the counter medicines, narcotics and pet medications from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rose Baker Center. They will not accept syringes. The Health Department will also offer free Narcan and training on site.
Today, the City Owned Cemeteries Advisory Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. The Shellfish Advisory Commission meets at 6 p.m. in the Harbormaster's Conference Room.
Tonight, the Beauport Hotel hosts free live music from 6 to 9 p.m. Cape Ann Lanes holds free music video bingo from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
In high school sports yesterday, Gloucester boys soccer beat Peabody 3 to 2, and volleyball shut out Georgetown 3 to 0. Girls soccer fell to Peabody 6 to 0. Today, boys golf plays at Bradford Country Club at 9:30 a.m., and field hockey hosts Swampscott at 4:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects a sunny and windy Tuesday, with a high near 58 and gusts up to 33 miles per hour. A small craft advisory is in effect on the bays until 8 p.m. tomorrow. Today's high tides in Gloucester Harbor are at 7:15 a.m. and 7:28 p.m.
