Good morning, Gloucester. It's Tuesday, October 6. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Brief. Today we look at the city's rising trash budget and the new carts.
The Daily Brief is free, and supported by local businesses. To sponsor it, visit capeanncurrent dot com slash advertise.
The city budgeted 4.92 million dollars for trash and recycling for the year that began July 1. That is up 69 percent from the year before. The jump follows the new Casella contract that replaced purple bags on October 1. Cart fees will cover about half the cost.
The state paid the city about 487,000 dollars in universal meal reimbursements in the free lunch program's first year. The district's school lunch calendar shows a snack pack style lunch on half days starting October 15.
City offices will close on Monday, October 12, for Columbus Day. They reopen at regular hours on Tuesday, October 13. The City Clerk's office will also close for general business on Friday, October 30, to prepare for the state election.
Today's public meetings include the Board of Commissioners of Trust Funds at 9:30 a.m., the Board of Health Eastern Waste Service Subcommittee at 4 p.m., and the Open Space and Recreation Committee at 5 p.m.
Tonight, Cape Ann Lanes hosts Music Video Bingo from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tomorrow, the Sawyer Free Library screens the film Secret Knowledge at 2 p.m.
In high school sports yesterday, volleyball swept KIPP Academy Lynn 3 to 0. Boys soccer fell to Marblehead 2 to 0, and golf lost to Danvers. Today, the unbeaten field hockey team hosts Beverly at 4:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects a sunny and cool Tuesday with a high near 58 and northwest wind gusts up to 32 miles per hour. High tides in the harbor are at 8:15 a.m. and 8:36 p.m.
We also remember Barbara Harvey, 83.
