It is Fire Prevention Week. Fire officials want every household to check its smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before heating season. The American Red Cross installs up to three free smoke alarms in Massachusetts homes, for renters and owners. Our checklist and free calendar reminders are at capeanncurrent dot com.
Lieutenant Michael Gossom became Gloucester's acting interim police chief on Tuesday. The mayor's office announced the change but did not say why it was made, or what happens to Michael Williams, who had led the department as acting chief since March. The city is still searching for a permanent replacement for former Chief Ed Conley, who retired early this year.
