Manchester firefighters host chili cook off, plus local sports and weather

Good morning, Manchester by the Sea. It's Thursday, October 8. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Manchester by the Sea Morning Current. Today we look at a chili cook off for Fire Prevention Week, along with local sports and weather.

It is Fire Prevention Week. Tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m., Manchester firefighters will host a free chili cook off. Visitors can taste chili and vote, tour the fire station and see safety demonstrations. The American Red Cross installs up to three free smoke alarms in Massachusetts homes, for renters and owners. Our checklist and free calendar reminders are at capeanncurrent dot com.
The state drought task force meets today at 9:30 a.m. The group's most recent declaration from September 10 keeps the Northeast region, which includes Cape Ann, at Level 1, a mild drought.
In town meetings today, the Board of Health meets at 8:30 a.m. The Historic District and Historical Commission meets at 6 p.m. Both meetings are at Town Hall and on Zoom.
In the race for state representative in the Fifth Essex District, Gil Frieden of Essex is the first of the three candidates to answer the Cape Ann Current's questionnaire. His answers on housing, the working waterfront, climate, school funding, transportation and all nine ballot questions are now in our voter guide at capeanncurrent dot com. Democrat Dru Tarr and Republican Christina Delisio have until October 16 to send theirs.
On Saturday, the Plein Air Quick Draw runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First Parish Church Community Hall. Also on Saturday, Kids Plein Air Painting takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Manchester library.
In high school sports, the Manchester Essex field hockey team shut out Amesbury 3 to 0 yesterday. In cross country, the girls team beat Amesbury 19 to 38, while the boys fell to Amesbury 26 to 31. Today, the golf team hosts Amesbury at 3:30 p.m. Boys soccer hosts Amesbury at 4 p.m., and girls soccer plays at Amesbury, also at 4. Tomorrow, the football team plays at Hamilton Wenham at 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects a chance of a shower this morning, then a mostly sunny and breezy Thursday with a high near 68. Tomorrow is expected to be sunny with a high near 65. A small craft advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. today. Hurricane Isaias is headed for the northern Gulf Coast and will not bring storm conditions to Cape Ann this weekend. Forecasters expect a dry, sunny Saturday, then say the storm's leftovers could bring rain showers Sunday night into Columbus Day, with no flooding or damaging winds expected.
