Good morning, Essex. It's Friday, October 9. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Essex Daily Current. Today we look at the search for the town's first full time fire chief.

At their meeting on Monday, October 5, selectmen planned the search for the town's first full time fire chief. The goal is a February 1 start date. Voters must approve the change at the fall town meeting in November. A small committee will screen applicants in private.

Also on Monday, October 5, school leaders estimated Essex's share of the proposed new Essex Elementary School at 25 million dollars. The total project is 95.3 million dollars. The state would pay about 20.4 million, and Manchester would pay about 49.9 million. Voters will decide at special town meetings on November 16.

The Manchester Essex school district is spending 628,000 dollars on food service this year, or 528 dollars per student. The district contracts its food service to Chartwells. State records show the district also charged up to 72,000 dollars a year of general operating money to the program over the last five years.

Tomorrow, a community breakfast runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Essex. The free Essex Arts and Culture Festival follows from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

On Thursday, the Manchester Essex boys soccer team shut out Amesbury 4 to 0. Amesbury beat the girls soccer team 2 to 1, and the golf team fell to Amesbury 155 to 136. Tonight, the football team plays at Hamilton Wenham at 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service expects a sunny, breezy Friday with a high near 66, and a cooler Saturday. High tides in the Essex River today are shortly after 11 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
