Sunny and breezy Friday, cooler Saturday, showers Sunday night into Columbus Day

Sunny near 66 today with gusts near 28 mph, sunny near 61 Saturday, then rain showers likely Sunday night and Monday morning. High tides near 10 feet late morning through the weekend.

A sunny, breezy Friday in the mid 60s, the National Weather Service says, then a cooler, sunny Saturday. Rain showers are likely Sunday night into Columbus Day morning.

The forecast

The National Weather Service in Norton expects the following in Gloucester, in its 12:51 a.m. update:

  • Today: Sunny, with a high near 66. West wind of 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
  • Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 44. West wind around 8 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
  • Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Northwest wind of 3 to 10 mph.
  • Saturday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. South wind of 3 to 9 mph.
  • Sunday night: Rain showers after 7 p.m., with a low around 56. Chance of rain 90 percent.
  • Columbus Day: Rain showers before 11 a.m., then mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Chance of rain 80 percent.

On the water

No marine advisories are posted for Massachusetts Bay and Ipswich Bay this morning. Today, west winds of 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots and seas of 2 to 3 feet. Tonight, west winds of 10 to 15 knots, gusting to 25 knots in the evening. Saturday, northwest winds of 10 to 15 knots, easing to 5 to 10 knots in the afternoon, with seas dropping to 1 foot or less. Sunday, south winds of 5 to 10 knots. Showers Sunday night and Monday, with northeast winds of 10 to 15 knots Monday and gusts up to 20 knots.

Tides

High tides in Gloucester Harbor, according to NOAA predictions:

  • Friday: 10:57 a.m. (9.9 feet) and 11:22 p.m. (9.7 feet). Low tides at 4:40 a.m. and 5:05 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11:41 a.m. (10 feet). Low tides at 5:24 a.m. and 5:51 p.m.
  • Sunday: 12:07 a.m. (9.5 feet) and 12:20 p.m. (10 feet). Low tides at 6:05 a.m. and 6:34 p.m.

Rockport's high tides come about 2 minutes earlier than Gloucester Harbor's. In the Essex River, they come about 11 to 13 minutes later.

Drought: no new state declaration yet

The state's drought task force met Thursday. As of this morning, its most recent posted declaration is still the one from Sept. 10, which keeps the Northeast region, including Cape Ann, at Level 1, a mild drought.
