Good morning, Gloucester. It's Friday, October 9. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Current. Today we look at how the city pays for free school meals.

Gloucester spends 1.71 million dollars a year on school food service. The city runs its own kitchens, with about 850,000 dollars going to food and 870,000 dollars to salaries. Meals served rose about 12 percent in the fall of 2023 after the district joined the federal community eligibility program. A January 2024 state review flagged issues with lunch counts and temperature logs, but praised the program.

Regular bus rides cost nothing through the end of the year. The Cape Ann Transportation Authority extended free rides on its year round routes through December 31. Senior Dial a Ride and ADA transit stay free through 2027. The app based On Demand service still costs 2 dollars. Regular buses will not run on Monday, October 12.

In city meetings today, the SFL Saunders House Stewardship Committee meets at 10:30 a.m.

Today, you can tour the Captain Elias Davis House at 2 p.m. at the Cape Ann Museum. Tomorrow, the museum hosts its free Second Saturdays family program from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In high school sports, the Gloucester volleyball team swept Saugus 3 to 0 yesterday, and the golf team fell to Swampscott. Today, the field hockey team plays at Danvers at 3:45 p.m., and the football team hosts Salem tonight at 7 p.m. Tomorrow, the soccer teams host Rockport, with the girls playing at 4 p.m. and the boys at 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service expects a sunny, breezy day today with a high near 66 and wind gusts up to 28 miles per hour, and says tomorrow will be sunny and cooler. High tides in Gloucester Harbor today are at 10:57 a.m. and 11:22 p.m.

We also remember Constance M. Condon, 93.
