Good morning, Rockport. It's Friday, October 9. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Rockport Daily Current. Today we look at school improvement targets and the cost of school meals.
At its meeting Wednesday, the Rockport School Committee learned the town's schools missed several state yearly improvement targets. A district leader said the schools are making moderate progress and do not need state intervention, but the district is not excited about the results. The committee made student achievement its main goal for the year.
Rockport spends 902 dollars per student on school meals, more than most districts in the state. State financial reports show the schools put 95,000 dollars of general operating money into food service for the 2024 to 2025 school year. A state review in January 2025 flagged the program's eligibility paperwork, storage, and vending items.
On Wednesday, the Conservation Commission approved a septic system upgrade on Old Penzance Road. The project will crush a cesspool and move the home's wastewater treatment twice as far from the coastal bank.
Riding a regular Cape Ann Transportation Authority bus will stay free through December 31, 2026. Dial a Ride and paratransit rides will stay free through 2027. Regular buses will not run on Monday for Columbus Day.
Tomorrow morning, the Rockport Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Harvey Park. A photography workshop starts at 10:30 a.m. at T Wharf.
In high school sports, both soccer teams lost to Ipswich on Thursday. The boys fell 3 to 1, and the girls lost 1 to 0. Today, the field hockey team hosts Haverhill. Tomorrow, the soccer teams travel to Gloucester.
The National Weather Service expects a sunny Friday with a high near 66. Saturday is expected to be sunny and cooler, with rain showers likely Sunday night. High tides in Rockport are predicted to peak near 10 feet late morning through the weekend.
We also remember Timothy J. Evans, 80.
