Good morning. It's Saturday, October 10. This is the Daily Current, free public information for Cape Ann from the Cape Ann Current. I'm Kerry Jane. Today, Gloucester football and field hockey celebrate Friday wins, the state declares a significant drought for Cape Ann, and a look at weekend events.

In high school sports, Gloucester football beat Salem 35 to 17 yesterday. Hamilton Wenham defeated Manchester Essex 14 to 8. In field hockey, Gloucester shut out Danvers 5 to 0, and Rockport tied Haverhill 1 to 1. Today, Rockport soccer visits Gloucester, with girls playing at 4 p.m. and boys at 6 p.m. Salem girls soccer plays at Manchester Essex at 5 p.m. Sandwich field hockey visits Manchester Essex at 12:30 p.m. On Monday, Manchester Essex field hockey plays at Lynnfield at 10 a.m., and Rockport field hockey visits Newburyport at 10 a.m. Scores and schedules come from the state athletic association.

Several events are happening around Cape Ann today. In Gloucester, the Annisquam Arts and Crafts Show runs all day at the Annisquam Village Hall. The North Shore Arts Association hosts an all day art sale and open gallery. Downtown, Family Programs Second Saturdays runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Essex, the Essex Arts and Culture Festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. In Manchester by the Sea, the Manchester Essex junior varsity boys football team hosts Hamilton Wenham from 10 a.m. to noon.

For Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester by the Sea, the state moved the region to a Level 2 significant drought yesterday. The state says groundwater remains low in eastern Massachusetts despite September rain. For a Level 2 drought, the state asks residents to use less water and fix indoor leaks. Towns are asked to limit or ban washing sidewalks, driveways, cars and boats. Rockport already bans all outdoor water use. The state drought task force meets next on November 6.

In Rockport, the Zoning Board of Appeals met on Thursday to review a plan for an Eden Road home. The owners want to build a rear addition with an art studio sitting less than 2 feet from the back property line. The owners' attorney says the land behind the house is open and neighbors support the plan. The board plans to visit the property on Monday at 4:30 p.m. The hearing continues on Zoom on Wednesday, October 28, at 6 p.m.

Across Cape Ann, the Cape Ann Current is starting a series that follows public money. Starting Friday, October 16, a three week series will look at what share of state and federal spending reaches local businesses. The stories rely on public records, mainly the state comptroller's spending data. The final story on Friday, October 30, includes a free tool to search every vendor Massachusetts state agencies have paid since 2010. Business owners who sell to the government can share their experiences by emailing the Cape Ann Current.

Town and city offices across Cape Ann are closed on Monday for Columbus Day. Public meetings resume on Tuesday, October 13. The Gloucester City Council meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at City Hall to discuss zoning changes and an election warrant. The Essex Board of Selectmen meets at 6 p.m. Also on Tuesday, the Essex School Building Committee holds a community meeting at 6 p.m. at Manchester Memorial Elementary School. Residents should check the posted agendas before attending.

The National Weather Service expects a sunny and cool Saturday, with a high near 59 and northwest winds up to 12 miles per hour. The weather service says tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 44, and Sunday will bring mostly cloudy skies and a high near 60. Rain showers are expected Sunday night, with up to three quarters of an inch of rain possible. Showers are expected to continue into Monday. In Gloucester Harbor, high tide is at 11:41 a.m. today. Sunday brings high tides at 12:07 a.m. and 12:20 p.m.
