Good morning, Gloucester. It's Wednesday, October 14. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Current, free public information for Gloucester. Today we look at a steep rise in heating oil prices.
Heating oil in Massachusetts costs $6.18 a gallon this week. According to the state's weekly survey, that is a 74 percent jump from $3.56 a year ago. A typical home burning 800 gallons a winter will pay roughly $4,900 this season. That is an increase of about $2,100. You can use a heating oil calculator on the Cape Ann Current website to estimate your own costs before you call your dealer.
In Gloucester, the city opens a dumpster today at the Public Works yard, 28 Poplar Street, for old trash carts and recycling bins that are not Casella carts. It is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the end of October, and on Saturdays, October 17, 24 and 31, from 9 a.m. to noon. Drop off is free.
The School Committee meets today at 6 p.m. in the high school library and on Zoom. The agenda includes votes on operating protocols and a new special education job description.
The Cape Ann Y M C A hosts a free talk on connecting with your 9 to 11 year old tomorrow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. On Friday, the Cape Ann Museum offers a free tour of the Captain Elias Davis House from 2 to 2:30 p.m.
In high school sports, Gloucester won three times on Tuesday. Field hockey beat Beverly 6 to 3. Volleyball swept Winthrop 3 to 0. Golf defeated Winthrop 38 to 34. Today, girls soccer hosts Chelsea at 4:30 p.m. Boys soccer travels to Tewksbury for a 7:15 p.m. game, and field hockey plays at Marblehead at 4 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects patchy fog this morning, giving way to a partly sunny afternoon with a high near 72 and a chance of late showers. Tomorrow is expected to be sunny and cooler. High tide in Gloucester Harbor is at 2:14 p.m. today.
