Gloucester opens a dumpster at the DPW for old trash carts and recycling bins, starting Wednesday

From Oct. 14 through the end of October, residents can bring old carts that are not Casella's, and old recycling bins, to the Public Works yard at 28 Poplar St. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus three Saturday mornings.

Trust Check: Checked against public records

Gloucester residents with old trash carts or recycling bins left over from before the switch to Casella now have a place to get rid of them. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 14, the city will have a dumpster at the Department of Public Works yard for old carts and bins, according to a city notice posted Tuesday.

What to bring

Old recycling bins and old trash carts that are not Casella carts. Keep the carts Casella delivered for the new service; those are the ones the trucks empty.

Where and when

  • Place: DPW yard, 28 Poplar St., Gloucester
  • Weekdays: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., through the end of October
  • Saturdays: Oct. 17, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31, 9 a.m. to noon

Drop-off is free. Questions go to the Department of Public Works, and program details are on the city's New Trash & Recycling Program page.

Why now

Casella took over Gloucester's curbside trash and recycling on Oct. 1, with automated pickup from city carts. Personal barrels are no longer emptied, which left many households with carts and bins they no longer use.

Earlier coverage: Casella takes over Gloucester trash pickup Thursday as purple bags end (Oct. 1), how the new service works, and Gloucester's trash bill jumps to $4.9 million. Here is who pays, and how it compares (Oct. 6), what the city pays and what households pay.
