Know Before It's Decided

Essex preservation committee to weigh kayak racks, Centennial Grove erosion work and a rail trail design on Oct. 21

Three requests for Community Preservation money are on the committee's Oct. 21 agenda, ahead of a fall town meeting that may be asked to fund Community Preservation projects. Residents can speak at the meeting.

Trust Check: Checked against public records

Essex's Community Preservation Committee will review three requests for Community Preservation money when it meets Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. at Town Hall, 30 Martin St., according to its posted agenda.

On the agenda

  • Red Gate Road kayak racks
  • Centennial Grove erosion control
  • Design of a downtown rail trail

The agenda lists the three as project applications. It does not give costs or details for any of them.

Why it matters now

Community Preservation money comes from a local surcharge on property tax bills and a state match. Spending it takes a town meeting vote after the committee makes a recommendation. Essex's fall town meeting is Nov. 16, and a draft warrant the selectmen reviewed this month includes an article for Community Preservation projects, with erosion control at Centennial Grove named as a possible item. How to take part

The agenda sets aside time for open communication and discussion with residents. The committee's next regular meeting after Oct. 21 is Dec. 9.
