Saugus will not play its football game against Gloucester this Friday, Oct. 23. Gloucester will get a win by forfeit.

Saugus school leaders told Gloucester High School that serious safety concerns and the number of players they have available mean their team cannot play the game, according to Gloucester Athletic Director Bryan Lafata. Saugus did not give more details.

The forfeit moves Gloucester to 6 and 1. The Fishermen play next at Beverly on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m.

Gloucester's football and cheer coaches will update families about practice times. The cheer team still has competitions this weekend.
