Good morning, Gloucester. It's Friday, October 2. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Brief. Today we look at whether local police use automated license plate readers.

Automated license plate readers are spreading across the North Shore, but there is no current public record of the Gloucester Police Department using them. The city did receive a state grant for a plate reader camera system to mount on a cruiser in February 2011, but it does not appear in later records. A city official told the City Council in 2023 that cameras that read plates are used to enforce parking. From 2022 through 2025, Gloucester reported 51 vehicle thefts and 104 burglaries.
Ospreys had a strong year north of Boston. Essex County Greenbelt documented 103 breeding pairs in the region this year, up from 92 in 2025. The resident pair on the OspreyCam behind Lobsta Land Restaurant, Annie and Squam, raised two chicks this summer. Their names are Sunny and Stormy.
In local events, the Cape Ann Museum offers a free tour of the Captain Elias Davis House today from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Tomorrow, Beauport Cruiselines hosts an Oktoberfest Cruise from 1 to 4 p.m.
In high school sports, the Gloucester field hockey team stayed perfect at 8 and 0 with a 5 to 2 win over Danvers on Thursday. Also on Thursday, the volleyball team was swept at Swampscott. Tonight in football, the Fishermen host Winthrop at 7 p.m. Gloucester enters the game with a record of 2 and 1.
The National Weather Service expects mostly sunny skies today with a high near 74, and a slight chance of showers after 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny and cooler, with highs in the low 60s. Today's high tides in Gloucester Harbor are at 3:49 a.m. and 4:05 p.m.
