Good morning, Manchester by the Sea. It's Friday, October 2. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Manchester by the Sea Daily Brief. Today we look at local crime data and automated license plate readers.
The Daily Brief is free, and supported by local businesses. To sponsor it, visit capeanncurrent dot com slash advertise.
Automated license plate readers are spreading across Massachusetts, but there is no public record of the local police department using them. The cameras are mainly sold to catch car thieves and burglars, which are rare in town. Between 2022 and 2025, Manchester by the Sea reported no more than four burglaries or two vehicle thefts in any single year.
The Select Board and Finance Committee will meet together on Monday, October 5, to prepare for the November special town meeting. The boards will also hear from the committee planning a new Essex Elementary School. Other agenda items include the November state election warrant, two short term rental licenses, and the reappointment of the town accountant and treasurer.
In town meetings today, the Manchester Essex schools building committee communications working group meets virtually at 11:30 a.m.
In high school sports, the Manchester Essex boys soccer team tied unbeaten Newburyport 0 to 0 on Thursday, while the girls team fell to the Clippers 7 to 0. Tonight, the Hornets football team plays Amesbury at 6:30 p.m., still looking for their first win of the season.
The National Weather Service expects a high near 74 today with a 50 percent chance of showers after 5 p.m., and a sunny and cooler weekend with highs in the low 60s. High tides in Gloucester Harbor are at 3:49 a.m. and 4:05 p.m. today.
