At its September 22 meeting, the Essex School Building Committee put off setting a target price for the new elementary school. Officials said six days later that a cost review brought the price down to about 95 million dollars. That is down from the 98.9 million dollar estimate presented at the meeting. Members wanted to review possible cuts before choosing a final number.
Residents planning to attend the next school building community meeting should check the date with the district. The school district lists the meeting for Wednesday, October 7. Town postings list it for Thursday, October 8, at Essex Elementary School. Meanwhile, selectmen will meet with the public works and finance boards on Wednesday, October 7, to coordinate projects.
On Saturday, October 3, the TOHP Burnham Public Library hosts a grand opening for its new patio. The event runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. outside on the lawn.
In high school sports, the Manchester Essex field hockey team beat Newburyport 2 to 0 at home yesterday. The boys soccer team won 4 to 0 at Hamilton Wenham on Tuesday, while the girls soccer team lost 1 to 0. The football team hosts Amesbury tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., looking for its first win after a 21 to 0 loss to Lynnfield on September 25.
The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies today with a high near 72, a slight chance of evening showers tomorrow, and a sunny and cooler weekend. High tide in the Essex River comes a few minutes after the 3:08 p.m. high tide in Gloucester Harbor.
