Casella takes over Gloucester trash pickup as automated carts begin

Good morning, Gloucester. It is Thursday, October 1. From the Cape Ann Current, I am Kerry Jane, with your Gloucester Daily Brief. Today marks the start of automated trash collection.

Casella takes over Gloucester curbside trash and recycling today, ending the city's purple bag program. Residents must now use wheeled carts. Standard service costs 300 dollars a year. Bulk items and appliances are no longer collected with yellow stickers. Residents must book and pay Casella directly for those pickups.

The Planning Board holds a public hearing today at 5 p.m. on a new subdivision plan. Energy North Incorporated is proposing a plan called "Haffner's Way" for land off Sargent Street, Millett Street, Gale Road and Gloucester Avenue.

In city meetings today, the Board of Assessors meets at 9 a.m. A Planning Board subcommittee meets at 3:30 p.m., followed by the full board at 5 p.m.

In local events, the high school field hockey team hosts Danvers today at 4:30 p.m. Tomorrow, the Cape Ann Museum offers a tour of the Captain Elias Davis House at 2 p.m.

The Gloucester field hockey team improved to 7 and 0 with a 5 to 0 win over Peabody on Monday, September 28. The football team hosts Winthrop tomorrow at 7 p.m. after routing Revere 42 to 7 on Friday, September 25. In volleyball, the Fishermen swept Georgetown on Wednesday. Boys soccer lost 1 to 0 at Swampscott on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies today with a high near 72, and mostly sunny weather tomorrow with a high near 73. High tide in Gloucester Harbor is at 3:08 p.m. today.
