In high school sports, Amesbury beat Manchester Essex football 46 to 8 last night. The Hornets fall to 0 and 4. In field hockey, the Hornets are 6, 2 and 1, and sit tenth in the Division 4 power rankings. Kiernan Day is tied for third in area scoring with 15 points. Goalie Maeve McArdle has six wins and five shutouts. The Hornets host Rockport on Monday. In soccer, the boys rank 25th in Division 4, and the girls rank 30th. There are no varsity games today.

In events today, the TOHP Burnham Public Library hosts the grand opening of its patio on the outside lawn from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Essex residents and business owners say downtown needs parking, a small market, and more reasons to stay. Those themes dominated a town and chamber of commerce forum on Tuesday, September 29. Town Administrator Brendhan Zubricki also outlined a push for a more than 2 million dollar federal study of causeway flooding. The town is working with the state on a grant application to fund the study. Other ideas from the forum included a walking trail, year round public restrooms, and a farmers market.

The Manchester Essex Regional School Committee meets Tuesday, October 6. The principals of Essex Elementary and Memorial School will present their school improvement plans and the outlook for the 2027 budget year. The committee will also hear a report from the Essex School Building Committee, which is weighing the cost of a new elementary school.

The National Weather Service expects a sunny and cool weekend, with highs near 61 today and 59 tomorrow. High tides in the Essex River come just after Gloucester Harbor, where high tides peak today at 4:51 a.m. and 5:09 p.m.
