This week on Cape Ann: plein air painters, a storm-delayed symphony opener and a Dogtown dog walk
Picks for Oct. 1 to 7, including the start of Cape Ann Plein Air's 10th year and Gloucester's Community Safety Day.
Painters fan out across Cape Ann starting Saturday, and two events knocked off the calendar by last weekend's nor'easter get a second try. Here are our picks for the week.
Cape Ann Plein Air, Oct. 3 to 11
Cape Ann Plein Air marks its 10th year with 36 artists painting outdoors across the region, according to the organizers. Most events are free.
- Open gallery at Charles Fine Arts most days of the week, starting Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours are shorter on later days; check the organizers' calendar.
- Nocturne painting night on Bearskin Neck in Rockport, Sunday, Oct. 4, 6 to 9 p.m.
- Free painting demonstrations from noon to 1:30 p.m.: Monday, Oct. 5, at Granite Pier, 16 Wharf Road, Rockport; Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Hammond Castle Museum, 80 Hesperus Ave., Gloucester; and Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Sharksmouth, 305 Summer St., Manchester-by-the-Sea. Organizers ask people to RSVP.
- Opening reception Monday, Oct. 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Beauport Hotel in Gloucester, where artists will show their first paintings of the week.
Later in the week, a 10th anniversary gala and art sale is Friday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, with more than 175 paintings for sale. Tickets are $100 in advance and $125 at the door, according to the Chamber of Commerce listing. A quick draw competition fills downtown Manchester-by-the-Sea on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free public art sale at the North Shore Arts Association runs Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Gloucester Community Safety Day, Saturday, Oct. 3
The Gloucester Police Department's Community Safety Day is Saturday, Oct. 3, according to the city's calendar. The city has not posted a time or location. (Update: the city has posted the time, place and demonstration schedule.)
Rockport farmers market, Saturday, Oct. 3
The Rockport Exchange Farmers Market is in Harvey Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with music by Steve Lacey, according to its Chamber listing.
Cape Ann Symphony opener, Sunday, Oct. 4
The Cape Ann Symphony opens its 75th season with "75th Fantastique!" on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Manchester Essex Regional High School. The concert was moved from Sept. 27 because of the nor'easter, the symphony said. Music Director Yoichi Udagawa leads a program of Boulanger, Debussy and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Tails on the Trails, Sunday, Oct. 4
Cape Ann Animal Aid's fundraising walk follows a 2.6 mile loop from the water tower at the top of Summit Avenue in Rockport through Dogtown Woods. Walkers start at 10 a.m., and late arrivals are accepted until noon. Registration is $30 for adults and $10 for children 5 and older. Children under 5 and dogs walk free but should still register. The trail is rocky in places, organizers say. Money raised supports homeless animals at the shelter.
Cider donut cruises in Essex, Oct. 3 and 4
Essex River Cruises and Charters, 35 Dodge St., runs fall cider donut cruises Saturdays and Sundays in October, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $44 for adults and $30 for children; children under 3 ride free. Reservations: 978-768-6981.
At the libraries
- Sawyer Free Library's Harvest Storytime with Backyard Growers is Thursday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. on the Saunders House lawn, 88 Middle St., Gloucester. No registration needed.
- The Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library's Hearthside Book Group discusses "The Correspondent" on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m., in person and on Zoom.
- Sawyer Free Library screens the 2001 BBC documentary "Secret Knowledge" on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a discussion with Manship artist Bing McGilvray, a friend of David Hockney. It ties in with the "Hockney Reproductions" exhibition, on view through Oct. 18.
